Native American Life
The Chumash tribe were exceptional. The Spanish said that the tribe were "of good disposition, affable, liberal, and nice". They were extremely smart and talented and lived well organized. The Chumash had advanced skills in wood - working. Most of them were happy to live in a mission. The Indians who didn't like living in a mission shot flaming arrows
at the mission and burnt down the mission, but the granary and church causing to rebuild it.
Two of the raid leaders were caught and sent to Monterey. Either way this did not stop the raid attacks. About 10% to 15% of the Indians were run-a-ways. Not to mention discipline was really strict. Indians who broke the rules were punished and even whipped for a serious offence. They had to give up their own life style to learn a new one. The men could no longer fish or hunt and the women had to cook. The children had to help the adults get jobs.

The padres taught the men to be farmers and to build buildings. The women learned to work with different things. The women learned how to weave blankets, make soap and candles, and do laundry. Children helped the adults do their new jobs. When the neophytes were not working, they were at church, learning how to be Christians.
